The Center’s innovative music and arts programming is showcased throughout the year, culminating with the Eagle Rock Music Festival. The festival is built upon strong partnerships with sponsors, programming partners, musicians, and the community. Center for the Arts Eagle Rock collaborates with Dublab, FYF Fest, Low End Theory, Kingsize Soundlabs, The Ship Studios, LA Record, KOXY Radio, Razorcake, and Zocaloc to create the diverse lineup the Eagle Rock Music Festival is known for.

Back by popular demand, the Low End Theory stage features many different electronic artists including TokiMonsta, the only female artist on the stage and a classically trained musician who uses soundscapes and textures to fuse vintage sounds with progressive styles. FUTURA resident Teebs, has a beat driven style that creates unique but organic electronic musical experiences. Both TokiMonsta and Teebs are on the Brainfeeder label which was founded by this stage’s headliner Flying Lotus, who is known for his atmospheric styling that merges genres of jazz and hip hop with electronica, 8-Bit, bass music and more.

The Global Stage hosted by Dublab Future Roots includes a diverse mix of experimental music from all over the world. East Los Angeles band El-Haru Kuroi fuses traditional Mexican folk waltz with jazz swing, afro-Peruvian, other Latin-Brazilian rhythms, and rock. Fresh off her performance at the Hollywood Bowl with Stevie Wonder and Sharon Jones, Los Angeles singer-songwriter Mia Doi Todd’s delicate and powerful voice will delight the audiences at the Global Stage.

The Emerging Stage presented by Ford Focus “Gimme the Gig II” and co-curated by FYF, LA Record, and KOXY Radio features experimental producer/musician Boom Bip who is known for his detailed ambient style of music.  Also playing is noise rock band Health who mix haunting monotone vocals and raw synth to create their unique sound.

Performing on the Family Stage are husband-and-wife duo and self proclaimed “kindie rock” musicians Ellen and Matt. The Ukulele Orchestra of the Western Hemisphere is a unique group that plays arrangements of mash-ups and songs ranging from Radiohead, Hank Williams, Aerosmith, and even Justin Bieber.

Also on Caspar Ave, will be various activities including learning to play the ukulele, comic book making, clay projects, and more. The programs, all taught by the Center’s instructors, will give a sneak peek of the Fall Education programming available at Center for the Arts Eagle Rock.

A distinct element of the festival is Bonne Musique Zydeco band playing on the 2^nd floor balcony of the Welcome Inn Motel. The 6-member band specializes in Creole music of Louisiana and east Texas.

Colombo’s Italian Steakhouse offers a wide-range of musicians including pop/folk/jazz duo Ampersand, and acoustic set from Saucy Monky, Eagle Rock High School faculty band Six-Pak, and Americana/Indie Rocker Duniven.

Highland park publication Razorcake and Northeast L.A. based arts and educational nonprofit Zocaloc team up to present a unique punk rock experience. The stage includes sets from French Exit, Summer Vacation, and L.A. based garage punk band Barrio Tiger.

Rantz Auto Center opens their garage for the Eagle Rock High School Latin Jazz Band directed by Carlos Kuhlmann and revving up their engines to play is 8-piece Afro-Cuban Salsa band Umbalaye.

In the Panang parking lot Kingsize Soundlabs and the Ship Studios showcase fourteen different acts performing back-to-back sets. Los Angeles based Little Red Lung creates leaping harmonies layered over delicate piano and noise experimentation. Indie group Blonde Summer generates sharp vocals and unrelenting rhythms to create irresistible melodies and sextet Shadow Shadow Shade provide unison choir-like vocals over haunting melodies. Closing at the Kingsize stage is Rooney, a five-piece rock band from Los Angeles, whose music sounds like a mix between British Invasion rock and 1980s pop.

Foodies rejoice! The festival also offers an eclectic blend of international foods at the Eagle Rock Farmers Market as well as a variety of food trucks including the Poutine Truck, Greasy Weiner, Slice Truck, Fresh Fries, and more. This adds to the diverse array of delicious restaurants along the festival route such as the newly opened Halong Bay, fresh & flavorful Four Café, music festival venues Colombo’s Italian Steakhouse and Camilo’s California Bistro, and the always-popular Coffee Table & Lounge, Taco Spot, and the Oinkster!

A five-dollar suggested donation can be made at the main entrances and throughout the festival. This contribution supports Center for the Arts Eagle Rock, the non-profit arts organization that produces the Eagle Rock Music Festival. A free shuttle service to and from the festival will be available from the Eagle Rock Plaza, where limited free parking will be available for festivalgoers.

The festival will take place on Colorado Blvd. between Eagle Rock Blvd. and Argus Dr. in Eagle Rock, on Saturday October 1, 2011, from 4:00-11:00pm.

On this special evening we are proud to present a very special set from Shlohmo, celebrating the release of his new album “Bad Vibes” on FoF Music. Opening sets by residents Teebs and Asura, with visuals by Strangeloop. Strangeloop will also perform a special ambient set of “Fields” (his most recent release on Brainfeeder) featuring Austin Peralta.

FUTURA is an all ages monthly arts experience at Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock. FUTURA aims to give a home to Los Angeles’ brightest and most forward thinking musical and visual minds in experimental art. More than an over flow of creativity from Low End Theory, FUTURA is an outlet for the ambient electronics and forward-thinking orchestral forays of the Los Angeles music scene.

FUTURA houses two resident performers, Teebs and Asura. Teebs’ recently released Brainfeeder album Ardour has been hailed by resident advisor as “one of the most beautiful albums of the year, alternating between trembling lullabies and softly thumping hip-hop day dreams” and was awarded an 8.0 from Pitchfork. Asura, the classically trained and tirelessly prolific musician produces music which “exists in an interesting middle place between club-ready, low-end-dedicated rhythms and ethereal synth and vocal melodies” according to XLR8R.

Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock announces the commission of “The Mapping of Countries Yet to Come”

 
Support this new film/music collaboration between Miwa Matreyek and Steven Ellison (Flying Lotus) set to premiere at CFAER in June 2012. Donations received between now and November 30, 2011 will be doubled through a matching grant from the Los Angeles County Arts Commission.

The Project

Miwa Matreyek is an internationally recognized animator and multi-media filmmaker. Steven Ellison is an international laptop artist, known as Flying Lotus. These multi-disciplinary Los Angeles artists will collaborate together for the first time this year to find inspiration and direct sampling of northeast Los Angeles’ imagery and sounds to create The Mapping of Countries Yet to Come, a piece that celebrates the present communities surrounding Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock. Their work will debut at Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock in June, 2012.

Who We Are

Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock provides local, innovative, and accessible arts programming. We create innovative and multicultural art education opportunites through workshops, after school programming, and arts camps. We create jobs for artists and teachers. We produce six exhibitions per year and showcase over 200 local emerging, and established artists annually in our art auction. We produce the largest free music festival in Los Angeles, the Eagle Rock Music Festival.

We ask that you contribute in a meaningful way to Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock and this project. If we receive your tax-deductible donation between August 1-November 30, 2011 it will be doubled through a Matching Grant from the LA County Arts Commission Cultivate/Create Initiative. Your on-going support will ensure that Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock can produce more innovative programming like this in our community. Matching acknowledgement letters will be sent by LA County Arts Commission.
